Your first visit with an oral and maxillofacial surgeon

The first visit isn't for surgery: it's to understand what's going on, review the options and leave with a plan. Here's how to prepare.

What to bring

  • ID or passport.
  • A list of the medication you take and your allergies.
  • Recent X-rays or CT scans. If you already have a CT scan or a panoramic X-ray, bring it: it avoids repeating imaging.
  • A note from your dentist or orthodontist, if they referred you.

What happens at the visit

  • Clinical history: I open your record with your background.
  • Examination of your mouth, bite, opening and face.
  • Review of your imaging, or a request for what's needed.
  • An explanation of the diagnosis, the options and what each involves.

Questions worth asking

  • What happens if I don't have surgery?
  • What kind of anesthesia will I need?
  • How many recovery days should I plan for?
  • What follow-up comes after?
